Gentoo has been chosen to deliver one of the first ever UK trials of the Government backed Pay As You Save (PAYS) scheme.

Many householders want to reduce their emissions from their homes but are put off by the cost.  PAYS will trial different ways of paying for work so it’s affordable.

The Gentoo PAYS pilot will give households the opportunity to invest in energy efficiency and microgeneration technologies in their homes with no upfront costs.  Householders will make repayments spread over a long enough period so that repayments are lower than their predicted energy bill savings, meaning financial and carbon savings from day one. 

Over the next 15 months, Gentoo will identify 100 properties made up of a mix of both void and occupied homes in the Sunderland area which will be retrofitted with energy efficiency and microgeneration measures. 

This is a great opportunity for Gentoo, it will enable us to build on our experience of achieving the Decent Homes Standard throughout all of our homes.  It will not only save customers money but also enable us to achieve our environmental objective of giving the planet a little something back, whilst learning lessons for the whole sector.

Who can apply?

Properties included in the PAYS scheme will be advertised through Gentoo’s Choice Based Lettings Scheme and as long as you are aged 16 or over and are not subject to immigration control, you can register to live in a Gentoo Sunderland home.

Current Gentoo Sunderland customers can also apply to have their home included in the PAYS scheme.

How to apply?

If you are not already registered then applicants need to complete a housing application form which can be completed over the phone, in person or via the Gentoo website. 

Gentoo will advertise all PAYS properties in housing offices, local newspapers and in their property centre.  Each property advertised will outline who the property is suitable for.

Applicants will need to express interest in that property in person, at any housing office, at the property centre, over the phone or via the website. There is no limit to the number of properties applicants can express interest in.
